Fr Patrick has written to our local MP, Mr Matt Rodda, in these words:
Monday 2 November 2020
Dear Mr. Rodda,
We had the pleasure of meeting on South View Avenue in the run-up to the General Election. I am forwarding you a letter Catholic Bishops’ Letter 31Oct20 written by Cardinal Vincent Nichols to the PM on behalf of the Catholic Church in England & Wales in regard to the extension of lockdown to places of worship.
There has not been one single case of infection in a Catholic Church and, speaking for Our Lady & St. Anne, Caversham, we have done everything possible to implement to the letter all the health & safety measures laid down by the Government. I am very disappointed that we have been obliged to discontinue our weekly and Sunday Masses and ask you, as our MP, to please represent our case for the re-opening of churches for public worship as soon as possible.
I realise that you sit on the opposition benches and had Labour been in power the Covid-19 crisis might have been dealt with differently. Nonetheless, this is not a party-political issue, it is one of basic social justice.
Thanking you in anticipation and wishing you every blessing in your work of public service,
[Father] Patrick H. Daly, Parish Priest
Our Lady & St. Anne, South View Avenue, Caversham, RG4 5AB
